Brief History of Commerce Department, Katwa College

The Commerce education was first introduced in the college in 1957-58 session in the intermediate Level affiliated by the Calcutta University with two teachers (Prof. M.N. Basak and Prof. S.Guha) to cater the need of commerce education in the Locality. After a brief spell of 4 years, the college was able to introduce degree course from the session 1961-62 and was affiliated to the University of Burdwan. During this period, the commerce education was taught in the day shift of the college. But in the year 1965, Evening shift (extended day) was granted by the University of Burdwan. From the session 1966-67, Honors course in commerce was introduced and since then both Pass course and Honours course are being taught here. Many outstanding students of the commerce Dept. have been placed in many outstanding capacities and the alumni of the Dept. includes Prof. Amit Kumar Mallick, Vice-Chancellor, B.U, Dr. D.P. Samanta, Ex- Principal of the college, Dr. Nirmalendu Sarkar, The Present Principal of this College, Dr. Sunil Kumar Mukherjee, Retired Reader of the college, Pareshnath Adhikari, senior Bank Officer of UCO Bank and many lectures and teachers. The department is very rich in academic and other activities. There are sufficient books in the library.

To develop a robust teaching-learning ecosystem within the department and beyond, with an aim to create future professionals, entrepreneurs and researchers with a global outlook characterised by awareness of contemporary economic, financial, social, governance, legal and environmental aspects.
